Where Are They Now?

We know that every student is unique, and so is the amount of time that each student spends at The Monarch School. Enrollment varies from one to ten years and beyond , with the “average” enrollment time being three years. About 8-12 students graduate from Monarch’s high school every year, and many others transition before graduation to public and private elementary, middle and high schools.

Periodically we feature those students who have transitioned or graduated from Monarch with an update on what is happening in their lives. We are fiercely proud of their continued growth and accomplishments. Visit our website to read this month’s alumni update.

What Does “At Risk” Really Mean?

According to sources within the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and other national research centers and advocacy groups, the costs of being neurologically different are very high. These costs affect individuals, families, and society in profound ways. Without targeted, innovative, research-proven supports, people with neurological differences often cannot reach their full potential as human beings, and are at dramatically increased risk for developing even more debilitating symptoms; e.g., depression. Visit our website to read more on the costs of being neurologically different.

Foundation Highlight

We are privileged this month to feature one of The Monarch School’s generous supporters, The Fondren Foundation. Formed in 1948, The Fondren Foundation is dedicated to providing funding exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific and/or educational purposes. The Fondren Foundation has been a pivotal supporter of The Monarch School’s capital campaign. We are deeply grateful for their investment in the future of The Monarch School and their strong advocacy on behalf of children with special needs.

Music Therapy Spotlight Dance of Joy

Apprentice Level students working with Kay Taylor, Monarch’s Neurologic Music Therapist, recently wrote their own lyrics to the music of Bob Marley's Redemption Song while others learned a drum accompaniment.

Art By Kate

We are excited to announce the launch of Monarch Voyager, Kate Mattheisen’s new website: www.katematthiesen.com.

Drawing and painting became Kate’s driving passion when a gifted teacher at The Monarch School combined play and art therapy. Later, in 2004, she offered Kate the medium of an oversized sheet of black paper and oil pastels, and Kate fell in love with them. Her work was juried into the Greater Houston Fall Open Show through Houston Civic Art Association (Bellaire, TX) and she received two awards in 2006. Also that year, her one-person exhibition, Fresh Air, was on view at The Jung Center of Houston’s main gallery, setting an opening reception attendance record. Visit our website for more on Kate!

A Swift Look at Event Planning

On January 10, 2011, the Monarch Life Academy Event Planning class took a tour of Swift + company rental warehouse. Swift + company is an event catering, planning and rental business. Swift works with other businesses and individuals to plan and provide catering, rentals and staff for parties or events. During our tour students saw all of their rental items such as dishware, tables, tablecloths, chairs and lamps. Mr. Greg Pitzer, General Sales Manager, was kind enough to spend an hour with the students and explain in detail how to plan an event from start to finish, and soon thereafter, came to visit Monarch.

Building Dreams

This fall, as part of the Get Out Environmental Science program’s industrial arts component, students have been creating custom furniture pieces. During the Life Academy’s Holiday Sale, the students sold two end tables. The program is currently concentrating on student mastery of hand tools, including saws, chisels and planes.

An Inspiring Message

Enjoy the message and videos below, both of which were shared with us by Monarch parent, Barbara Adcock.

“The Methodist Hospital asked me to share my journey of living with ALS and to talk about the doctors who treat me. They have produced a TV ad as well as a video interview that include me, my husband Clif, and our son, Scott.” Click here to watch the TV ad and video.
